Title

The Cell Division Process

Overview

In this lesson students will be provided with the information of the process dealing with cell division. Students will go into depth on the cell cycle, mitosis and cytokinesis. This lesson will focus mainly on interactive note taking. With these notes students will then use them and their knowledge to complete a small project on the cell division cycle.

Objectives

Students will be able to...
  • understand the role of chromosomes in the cell cycle
  • describe the main events that occur doing the cell cycle
  • explain the phases of mitosis

Materials / Preparation Notes

Instruction

Opening

To begin the lesson I will review the major concepts that we went over the class before dealing with cell growth and division and relating questions to todays topics. (5-10min)
  • Based on the information we learned last class why do cell need to divide?
  • What role does cell division play in your life?
  • Do cells stop dividing?
  • How do you think a cell divides?

Activities

After the opening I will then pass out the notes handout. This handout will go along with the powerpoint presentation and videos that will be shown in class. There will be blank spaces throughout the notes where students will fill in the answers to help complete topic information. As I go along the powerpoint there will be breaks where short videos will be watched of cell cycles and divisions to help gain a better understanding of the topics covered. (50 minutes)

Closing

The presentation will take most of the class. If finished early I will ask a few closing questions as a pass out the homwork.
  • What is the role of chromosomes in cell division?
  • Can you name the main events in the cell cycle?
  • Can you name the main events in Mitosis?
  • What is cytokinesis?

Assessment Notes

I will use a homework assignment that had the cell cycles and mitosis cycles and their functions to assess the students knowledge on the subject matter. Homework is to be collected next class.
